New dirt track brings racing outdoors at the Oregon State Fairgrounds

Bob Leach is kicking around the idea of naming his new race track “Duck Pond Speedway.”

When he started to build a new dirt oval track at the Oregon State Fairgrounds this spring, the location between the parking lot in front of the Pavilion and Sunnyview Road NE had become a pond after all the rain and Leach had to remove squatters so he could build a 1/8-mile clay oval.

“I had to chase ducks out of here three times,” Leach said.

Leach outlasted the wet weather this spring and finished the oval that will make its debut during this year’s Oregon State Fair with racing each night Aug. 27 to Sept. 6 that is free for spectators with fair admission.
